Your Website Says You’re Great. So Does Everyone Else’s.

Your Website Says You’re Great. So Does Everyone Else’s.

Trusted. Experienced. Professional. Customer-focused. Quality service.

Go look at five competitors in almost any service business. You’ll see some version of those words on nearly every website.

That doesn’t mean they’re lying. It means the words have lost their power.

Here’s something I’ve started paying closer attention to when I conduct an Authority Audit:

The Claim-to-Proof Ratio.

Go to your homepage and count the claims you make about your business. Then count how many of those claims are backed up by proof.

“Trusted by homeowners for 25 years.” That’s a claim.

Hundreds of recent customer reviews explaining why they trust you? That’s proof.

“Experienced professionals.” Claim.

Photos of your team, credentials, years in the field, completed projects, and customers talking about the problems you solved? Proof.

“Exceptional customer service.” Claim.

A customer saying you answered the phone at 9:00 at night when their air conditioning died? Proof.

Now look at the two numbers.

If your homepage makes 12 claims and proves two of them, you have a problem.

And rewriting those claims with better words won’t fix it.

This is where the No-Claims Test gets interesting. Remove the words “trusted,” “best,” “leading,” “experienced,” and “professional” from your homepage.

What’s left?

Would a stranger still reach those conclusions from the evidence you’ve given them?

That’s the goal.

And don’t make people hunt for it. If you make an important claim, put the proof close enough that the reader doesn’t have to go looking for a reason to believe you.

Because authority doesn’t happen when you find the perfect words to describe yourself.

It happens when the evidence makes those words unnecessary.

You don’t need a better claim.

You need better proof.

Agree or Disagree?

Until next time,

Bobby

If this earned you a few minutes of your time this week, the best thank-you is forwarding this to a friend. We’re building this slowly and deliberately, one reader at a time.

FAQ

1. What is the Claim-to-Proof Ratio?

The Claim-to-Proof Ratio compares how many claims your website makes with how many it actually supports with evidence. If you say you're trusted, experienced, or results-driven, there should be visible proof that gives people a reason to believe it.

2. What counts as proof on a website?

Strong proof includes customer reviews, specific testimonials, case studies, measurable results, credentials, awards, project examples, media mentions, community involvement, and useful content that demonstrates expertise. The best proof comes from something other than your own claims.

3. Why aren't words like “trusted” and “experienced” enough anymore?

Because almost every competitor uses them. Customers have learned to look beyond marketing language and verify what a business says through reviews, Google, social media, third-party sources, and increasingly AI.

4. How can I tell if my website has enough trust signals?

Try the No-Claims Test. Remove words like “trusted,” “best,” “experienced,” “professional,” and “leading.” Then ask: Would someone still reach those conclusions based on the evidence left on the page? If not, you have a proof gap.

5. Do trust signals also help my business appear in AI search?

Yes. AI systems need information they can find and understand when evaluating a business. Clear credentials, reviews, consistent business information, demonstrated expertise, customer evidence, and credible third-party mentions give AI more evidence to work with.
